«Ремень и подтяжки», т. е. двойная безопасность. Это выражение применяется к любой системе, которая включает в себя резервные, запасные устройства. Когда, например, рождественское выступление британского монарха передавали по радио в прямой трансляции (сейчас его записывают), использовали два микрофона на случай, если один откажет. Это называется the belt and braces approach.

John carries not only a spare tyre in the car, but spare bulbs, fan belt and a can of petrol. He has a belt and braces approach to motoring. — В машине Джон имеет не только запасную шину, но и запасные лампочки, ремень вентилятора и канистру бензина.
